Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) and the National Institute of Student Welfare (INABIE) signed an inter-institutional collaboration agreement that aims to implement a training program for teachers and technicians on Food and Nutrition Education, which will have the technical assistance of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
With this collaboration, both institutions aim to contribute to the reduction of malnutrition in the Dominican student population.
The diploma named “Effective Food and Nutrition Education from the educational center. Tools to achieve healthy and sustainable food”; it will be taught in hybrid modality; it has five modules that will be taught by specialized teachers contracted by INABIE with the support of FAO, the Brazil-FAO International Cooperation Program, the Brazilian Cooperation Agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ABC/MRE) and the National Fund for Education Development of the Ministry of Education (FNDE/MEC).
The rubric was carried out in the rectory of the university on December 14, 2023, between Architect Miguel Fiallo Calderón, Rector at UNPHU, and Mr. Victor Ramón Castro Izquierdo, Executive Director of INABIE; and Dr. Ana Carolina Báez, Director of Nutritional Formulation and Evaluation of INABIE, were present from UNPHU, Patricia Matos, academic vice chancellor and José Ramón Suriel, director of the School of Education.

It was created under General Education Act 66-97 as an institution under the Ministry of Education, with the aim of ensuring access, permanence, and academic progress for the most vulnerable pre-university student community in the public education system by structuring a comprehensive social protection system that ensures coverage of their basic needs of food, health, nutrition; as well as psychological, social, cultural, and recreational. This way, until 2012 and operating under the status of Student Welfare Directorate, from January 2013 it started operating as an Institute.
