As part of a development program of the Ministry of Health of Abu Dhabi United Arab Emirates (UAE), our Distinguished Graduate and Graduate Research Professor, Dr. Alejandro Báez, was recruited to assume the role of Medical Director/Advisor for the Emergency Preparedness and Response Center (CEPAR).
Working with CEPAR’s Executive Director, Dr. Saleh Fares, and his adviser, Dr. Duane Caneva (formerly the Medical Director of the Department of Homeland Security in the US), Dr. Báez is on a mission to help organize and implement the first comprehensive emergency care system in the United Arab Emirates.
“CEPAR is not just a comprehensive coordinating center for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (capital of the UAE); we are actually working with leaders from the MENA region, the United Kingdom and the United States (Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Harvard) to develop a different model, a new and innovative comprehensive emergency and trauma care system. CEPAR seeks to organize and regulate in Abu Dhabi all the elements of the care system, in what we call “time-critical” conditions (trauma, stroke, infarcts) from the community to hospital systems (emergencies, ICUs); all with unified protocols, evidence-based guidelines, standardization and a robust technological platform, which we consider a real system that will redefine the future of emergency and trauma care,» says Báez.
