Farewell to Dean Juan Alfredo Biaggi Lama

Authorities from Universidad Nacional  Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) and the Fundación Universitaria Dominicana Pedro Henríquez Ureña performed a guard of honor before the remains of Dr. Juan Alfredo Biaggi Lama, judge of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), and dean of the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences of the university, who died on Sunday, June 18 of the current year at his residence; due of a heart attack, receiving a Christian burial in the Puerta del Cielo cemetery.

Dr. Biaggi Lama was dean of the university’s Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences, since February 2018; he was also a professor of the subject of Commercial and Societal Law. He graduated as a lawyer from the UNPHU Law School on 19 November 1974.

Biaggi Lama served as the first replacement judge for the president of the Civil, Commercial and Labor Chamber of the Court of Appeal of the Judicial Department of San Cristobal, a position he held from 1998 until July 30, 2021.

He has postgraduate studies in Constitutional Law at the Universidad de Salamanca, Spain; Constitutional Law at the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha and Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM); Commercial Law at the Judiciary of Spain; Master’s degree in Copyright and Industrial Property at the Universidad de los Andes, Venezuela, and PhD in Constitutional Law.

In his professional work, he stood out for providing his services to companies such as Falconbridge Dominicana, C. por A. (1974-1978) and Codetel (1979-1987), always linked to commercial law and labor law, both theoretically and practically.

He also performed different positions in the tourism sector of the country, such as guide and tour operator, member, and vice president of the Dominican Republic Chamber of Tourism. In the tourist press sector, he was elected as president of the Latin American Confederation in the terms 1988-1990 and 1990-1992, while occupying the position of tourism editor of the newspaper Hoy.

Author of more than fifty works, the most recent were Manual de Derecho Comercial, and Manual de Derecho Societario Dominicano. The launch took place on March 23, 2023, in the north side of the Horacio Álvarez Saviñón Auditorium, of UNPHU. Also noteworthy were: Manual of Dominican Labor Procedural Law; The Process of Restructuring and Commercial Liquidation of Natural and Legal Persons in the Dominican Republic​; Manual of Labor Procedural Law; The Marriage Regimes in the Dominican Legal System (2nd edition)​; the series A Century of Dominican Jurisprudence 1909-20 09​, a set of 17 volumes of legal thought of the Dominican Court of Cassation from 1908 to 2009; the Jurisprudential Supplements; and a wide variety of articles written for different graphic media.

He taught at the National School of the Judiciary, of which he is a founding member, as well as at the School of Electoral Training, the School of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the Universidad Autónoma deSanto Domingo (UASD), among others.
