UNPHU graduates and dean of Health Sciences, will participate in panel on the family doctor

WE ARE COMMUNITY CARE together with the Dr. Ramón Tallaj, invite the panel launch of the masterclass “Family Doctor, essential piece for the Health System” to be held on February 8, 2023.

The panel will be attended by ackowledged physicians for their great experience, including: Ramon Tallaj, President of the Board of Directors of SOMOS Community Care; William Duke, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU); Eddy Pérez Then, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of O&M Medical School; Eladio Pérez, Vice Minister of Collective Health of the Ministry of Public Health; Marcos Núñez, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) and President of FEPAFEM/PAFAMS; Herbert Stern, president of the Dominican Academy of Medicine; Rafael Ramos, president of the Dominican Society of Health Practitioners; Shamelle López, president of the American Association of Medical Students Intec; Marija Miric, executive president of Two Oceans in Health; Rubén Vásquez, vice president of the Dominican Society of Family and Community Medicine, and Michael Hermosa, COO Project IMG.

This event will be held in hybrid format, on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at 8:00 a.m., at the Sheraton hotel on George Washington Avenue 365, Santo Domingo. To attend in person or to watch the live stream, you must register at www.diariosalud.do/medicodefamilia.

About the masterclass 

The masterclass will be broadcast weekly for five weeks in 10-minute capsules through Televida, Channel 41, during the program Vida y Salud en Comunidad, which is broadcast on Mondays at 8:00 p.m. and through DiarioSalud. More details in the registration link. 

These capsules bring the viewer to know the life and career of Dr. Tallaj from his homeland, Dominican Republic, to his work in New York. 

The capsules contain topics such as: the art of being a family doctor, purpose in life, the fight against tyranny, resilience, immigration, innovation in medical management, the sense of community at work and the health revolution. The viewer will also have the opportunity to get to know firsthand the events that have marked Doctor Tallaj’s life and career and inspired his medical practice.

“Family Doctor, essential piece for the Health System”, is a contribution of SOMOS COMMUNITY CARE in the important and urgent task of humanizing health.

About Dr. Ramón Tallaj 

Dr. Ramón Tallaj is an outstanding physician and leader in the field of public health and family medicine. He was born in Santiago de Los Caballeros, Dominican Republic and graduated in Medicine at Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) in 1981, with mention of honor «Magna Cum Laude». Since then, he has held various positions in the health sector, including under-secretary of Public Health and Social Service, member of the Commission on Border Affairs of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and Medical Director of the Dominican Republic Institute of Social Security and Welfare.

Graduate of Internal Medicine in 1996, St. Louis Hospital. Luke’s Roosevelt, got his certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine that same year. He has been an active staff member and vice president of medical staff at Sttown’s Midtown Hospital, as well as an associate medical director of Outpatient Service in St. Louis. Vincent’s Midtown Hospital.

He has served in a variety of roles throughout his career, including chairing the Community Providers’ Advocates Board (ACP-PPS) and chairing the Corinthian Medical Independent Physicians Association. He has been an adjunct physician in the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, and twice vice president and former president of the «Dominican Medical-Dental Society». He was appointed from 2006 to 2009 as Bloomberg’s senior member of the New York City Community Task Force, and is a permanent member of the «Sammy Sosa Foundation» in the Dominican Republic, where he coordinates medical assistance for children from low-income families with serious health problems.

Dr. Tallaj has been recognized by the Dominican Dental Medical Society as an inspiration for his colleagues in 2009, and by Cambridge Who’s Who in 2010. 

He has also been responsible for telethons to help Haiti and has participated in more than 5,000 knee, hip, and amputation surgeries on three occasions. 

He has received several awards, including the «Most Outstanding Dominican of the United States of America» on two occasions. 

He received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2006 in New York City, and has been named one of the best doctors in the Americas by the Consumer Research Council of the Americas in 2006. Honored in the Association of Hispanic Health Care Executives – AHHE for Medical Entrepreneur of the Year 2016.
