UNPHU prepares to celebrate the first chess classic with international masters

Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) and the Dominican Chess Federation (FDA) are preparing for the celebration of the first chess classic «in memoriam» Pedro Henríquez Ureña, which will be held from September 16 to 22 of this year. This will be one of the most important tournaments held in the history of our country, which during that time will make us the world capital of the game of science.

The opening will take place on September 16, at 9:00 am. The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader Corona, has been invited to perform the Honor Move. We will also be accompanied by the ambassadors of the participating countries, as well as by the sports authorities of our country.

In these chess days, twenty international and national players with titles of Grand Master and International Master will be participating. The players come from the countries where Pedro Henríquez Ureña was a professor; that is, Argentina, Cuba, Spain, Mexico, and the United States. The Dominican Republic will be represented by 15 of its best chess players.

The tournament will be held through the Swiss nine-round system and there will be important prizes for the best players.

The tournament will be broadcast worldwide live, via social networks, from the game rooms, by a team of analysts led by Grand International Master Martha Fierro, from Ecuador. The referee corps will be advised by international referee Erick Hernandez of El Salvador.

The invited Grand Masters are some of the best chess players from their respective nations, outstanding worldwide; several national champions and members of the Olympic teams of their nations.
