Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), in coordination with the Instituto Técnico Superior Comunitario (ITSC), presented the play “The Suffragists 1942: One Hundred Thousand Votes of Dominican Women”, on the celebration of International Women’s Day.
The work is based on a historical fact of the Dominican Republic. Narrating the events in the country, from 1920 to 1942, when Dominican women decided to raise their voice claiming the right to elect and be elected to political positions, achieving women’s suffrage in the presidential elections in 1942, where one hundred thousand women, from all over the country, exercised their right to vote.
The event was attended by authorities and administrative staff at UNPHU; as well as the rector of the Instituto Técnico Superior Comunitario (ITSC), Pedro A. Quezada and the Vice-Rector of Linking and Extension, Alfredo Herrera, with the theater company of this institution.
The play featured the performances of Wendy Queliz, as the protagonist, playing Abigail Mejía; the magistrate Eunisis Vázquez Acosta, representing Adelia Weber Pérez, and the judge Yokaurys Morales Castillo, the suffragist Amada Nivar Pittaluga.
The activity took place in the Max Henríquez Ureña Hall, building 4 of the university.
