UNPHU School of Medicine holds White Gown ceremony

The Faculty of Health Sciences of Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) and its School of Medicine, celebrated the White Gown ceremony; occasion where 62 students were inaugurated to begin the pre-boarding cycle. This symbolizes the culmination of the cycle of study of basic sciences and the beginning of clinical practices, which involve direct contact with the patient and seeks to engage the student with Medicine, with the respect, seriousness and confidence that inspires this new investiture, emblem of the profession for more than two centuries.

Welcoming words were given by Dr. Willian Duke, dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences; motivational words were given by Patricia Matos, academic vice chancellor. Adrián De Oleo, Dean of Student Welfare, addressed the students motivating them to continue their professional training. 

The robes were placed by the dean of the faculty and Dr. Célida Rivas, coordinator of the Clinical Cycle, who was in charge of reading the Geneva Declaration; while the speech on behalf of the students was in charge of Michael De Oleo.

The activity also counted with the presence of Dr. Claudia M. Scharf, director of the School of Medicine; Dr. Jehisón Corporán, academic coordinator and as professor of honor, Dr. Mariela Pinales.

The celebration took place on Monday, November 13, 2023, in the Max Henríquez Ureña Hall, building 4, first floor of the university.

About the White Gown

The White Gown originated at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine in 1989; but the first full White Gown ceremony took place at Columbia University School of Physicians and Surgeons in 1993. Dr. Arnold. P. Gold, professor,  and pediatric neurologist, was in charge of it.
