Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), through its Faculty of Humanities and Education and its Department of Letters and Philosophy, held the talk “The Influence of the June 14 Movement on Dominican Democracy”, with the participation of Fidel Soto Castro, who was a member of that movement and Juana Guerrero, a professor in the Department of History and Geography.
During the conference, the movement 14 de Junio, founded in 1959, was born by the inspiration of the Glorious Achievement of Constance, Maimón and Estero Hondo, by 198 Dominican men in exile and a group of foreigners, of diverse ideologies, who supported the Dominican Liberation Movement, with the interest of ending the dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo.
They also discussed how the members of the movement were prepared, moving to Cuba to train in guerrilla warfare, supported by Fidel Castro, and then disembarking in several towns in the north of the Dominican Republic under the direction of commander Enrique Jiménez Moya. This armed insurrection was militarily defeated by the Dominican Army and Air Force under Trujillo.
The event was aimed at the UNPHU student community and was held on 14 June 2023, in the Conference Room of Building 3.
