The International School of Contemporary Music at Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), was present in the announcement of the celebration of the Santo Domingo Jazz Festival Casa de Teatro 2022. The edition is dedicated to Guillo Carias.
In its twenty-second edition, the Santo Domingo Jazz Festival 2022 as usual, brings a luxury billboard with groups from America and the Dominican Republic. This is one of the most important events of the genre held in this city. It will be held from Thursday, June 2, to Thursday, July 28, under the sponsorship of Banreserves, Banco Popular Dominicano, Casa Brugal, the U.S. Embassy, Texaco Caribbean GB Energy, Típico Bonao, UNPHU, Publicibao, Jazz en Dominicana, Compacillo.com and 97.7 FM
Freddy Ginebra, manager and director of Casa de Teatro Foundation, reported that the festival opens on June 2, at 9 pm, with the participation of the “Harvard Jazz Band” (USA). He said he is very happy to be able to resume the Jazz Festival, whose previous editions were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As usual, Casa de Teatro will host a group in the theater hall every Thursday. The program will continue on Thursday, June 9th, with the performance of “Pop Jazz Assembly and Metric Assembly”. On June 16, the turn will be “Angel Irizarry Quartet”, while on Thursday the 23rd “Manerra y Grupo” will be presented and on the 30th, “Roberto Carcasses Trío” will take the stage, from Cuba
For two months, the public will be able to enjoy a varied jazz proposal, starring national and international artists.
The festival will continue on July 7, with the star being the famous American jazz musician, René McLean, accompanied by the Dominican group “Aumbata”. On July 14, master Rafelito Mirabal and Sistema Temperado will delight jazz lovers from 9pm.
The latest performances are scheduled for Thursday, July 21 with the local group “El Gran Poder de Diosa” and the closing by “Divas en Jazz” with, Pirou Pérez, Sabrina Estepan and María de Mar, along with Gustavo Rodríguez Trio (RD).
About Guillo Carias
Guillo Carias, started his musical studies with his father, who was musician director of the municipal band of his native town, of San Juan de la Maguana. He continued his musical studies at the Conservatory of Music of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and later graduated from the University of Chicago, Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico, the University of Rio Piedras, with the main trumpeter of the Metropolitan Orchestra of New York, Jack Holanda.
He was chosen by Maestro Pablo Casals, dean of the Conservatory of Puerto Rico, to perform Joseph Haydn’s trumpet concert, with the Casals Festival Orchestra, for that year’s graduation ceremony. He was experienced like perhaps no other Dominican musician, when he started in the late 1950s, in Jaragua and El Ambassador hotels and then began a tour of Curaçao, San Juan, Nassau, in first-class hotel chains, on cruises, as well as musician of the orchestras of Tito Rodríguez, and other prominent singers of the 1960s.
In 1980, he moved to Santo Domingo and conducted Dick Hayman’s piano concert in the National Symphony Orchestra. Until the 1990s, he was conducting contracts for orchestras, musicians and singers for different entities, including the Santo Domingo Hotel and the Santo Domingo Country Club. He managed several occasions, so that international artists could come to the country, such as Armando Manzanero, Vicky Car, José José, Marco Antonio Muñiz and others.
