UNPHU announces creation of Social Affairs Forum

Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) announced the creation of the UNPHU Social Affairs Forum, with the aim of contributing to the study and solution of the nation’s basic problems within a climate of respect and democratic openness.

Rector, Architect Miguel Fiallo Calderón, said that several activities have been carried out within the initiative’s activities, among which he cited a seminar on fundamental rights, focused on the right of non-association, and a more recent one on planning and governance of the Colonial City, among others.

He also indicated that the purpose of the project is to offer high academic contributions to the study and treatment of issues that are of vital importance to Dominican society, both in the present and in its approach to future projection. The treatment from an academic perspective and vision of urgent tasks within the national problem will help to channel agreements aimed at finding appropriate paths for the solution of many of the issues related to the economic, social and institutional issues of the country.

He added that the prestige gained by the university in the academic field makes it an obligatory reference in the discussion of the national agenda and that this is an unwavering responsibility that UNPHU approaches with enthusiasm and seriousness.

The university’s professors and technicians are working to identify many issues that will be addressed in a broad and open-minded manner, in order to involve all sectors, both official, political and social, within a framework of programming priority issues on the national agenda.

Fiallo Calderón stated that the initiative is the result of a careful study based on an in-depth analysis of the national reality and the responsibility of the academy in the search for solutions to the problems that make up that reality.

The forum will be coordinated by the journalist and writer, Miguel Guerrero, Member of the Dominican Academy of History, under the direct supervision of the Rectory. 

The announcement was made at a meeting in which the deans of the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences, Dr. Juan Alfredo Biaggi Lama, and of Architecture and Art, Architect Omar Rancier, were present, both board members of the Forum.
