Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) and its Faculty of Humanities and Education recognized Inés Aizpún, director of Diario Libre, and Sor Leonor Gibb, mother, and promoter of education in the municipality of Consuelo. The awards were given considering the trajectories, dedication, merits, and contributions made for the benefit of Dominican society, which have contributed to educational development.
The awards were handed over from the hands of the Rector arcghitect Miguel Calderón Fiallo and the academic vice-chancellor, Patricia Matos. The welcome of the event were given by Patricia Matos, while the words of motivation were offered by the dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Geisha Carpio. The reading of the portraits of Sister Leonor Gibb and Inés Aizpún, was carried out by the director of the School of Education, José Ramón Suriel.
Inés Aizpún, in her professional practice, characterized by a clear, assertive journalistic style committed to integrity and ethics, has earned an important place in Dominican society. She has been a proponent of maintaining 4% of GDP for education.
Meanwhile, Sr. Leonor Gibb, is recognized for the implementation of a model with strong curricular emphasis, in which the conservation of fundamental values is promoted, and the construction of humanity. It is credited with attention to the social reality of multicultural communities, the development of a value-based educational model, and health. Her social work has extended to different Dominican communities where she has contributed to the field of education, social and cultural reality.
The event took place on March 31, 2023, in the Max Henríquez Ureña hall of UNPHU, building 4.
About Inés Aizpún
Born in Pamplona (Spain) and Dominican by choice, she is a graduate of Information Sciences from the University of Navarra and holds a master’s degree in Corporate Communication from Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) and the School of Business Administration (EAE).
In 1987, upon her arrival in the Dominican Republic, she joined the newspaper Ultima Hora and since then, she has developed his journalistic career in the media, with a brief interval at the United Nations (EFE).
Inés Aizpún began her journalistic work in Grupo Diario Libre, in Rumbo magazine, and later as director of the group’s magazines, the department of third-party magazines and the department of creation of new editorial products, both content and commercial. She has received the Caonabo de Oro prize, the Corripio de Comunicación Foundation Award for her career, and the Teobaldo prize from the Association of Journalists of Navarra.
About Sister Leonor
Sister Leonor belongs to the Sisters of the Order of the Immaculate Conception, of Canadian origin, and worked tirelessly in the sugar mill of Consuelo at San Pedro de Macorís. The congregation settled in this community and attended the level of education, health, and other areas of daily life of the place.
Since 1959, with the arrival of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception to the Ingenio Consuelo, in spite of the socio-political conditions of the moment, marked by tyranny, it has been evident a sustained growth of the community throughout history, which has translated into its educational development.
