Patricia Matos, academic vice-rector of the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), participated in the panel “Women in academia. Challenges and opportunities”, activity organized by Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC). Participants discussed their experiences and the limitations of the Dominican education system.
During the meeting the Mrs. Matos recounted her story, along with anecdotes and advice that motivated the improvement and personal growth of the female audience. “As women, we have to make decisions that sometimes cost us, but we have to make it,” she said. She also explained that after her mother’s death, she had to take on household responsibilities in addition to her college commitments. Upon discovering her vocation as an educator, she finished her studies in Hotel Management, her first career, to continue training in what she really loves: teaching.
The event was attended by Altagracia López, coordinator of the Center for Innovation and Education and former rector of Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC); Odile Camilo Vicent, rector of Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE); Elsa Moquete, acting academic vice rector and director of Internationalization of APEC.
The activity was carried out as part of the celebration of Equality Month, in the Social Security Auditorium, of INTEC.
