INAFOCAN and UNPHU Conclude a Diploma Course in Special Education

The National Institute for Teacher Training and Education (INAFOCAM) concluded the fourth edition of the Diploma Course on Special Education. The course was targeted at teachers, teaching coordinators and counsellors who work in the first cycle of elementary schools teaching children with special needs.

The objective of the Diploma Course in Special Education is to develop those professional and personal competencies of program participants that are necessary for effective work in the classroom.

The continued education program was developed with the academic support Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (UNPHU). The training was given in the university´s headquarters in Santo Domingo and in its campus in La Vega.

For her part, Licenciada Patricia Matos, Dean of the School of Humanities and Education of the UNPHU, gave the welcoming remarks, stating that “educational inclusion is a response to the great question expressed by teachers of how to confront the large diversity of students. For these reasons there exists a need in present-day society for teachers with knowledge who qualify to provide special education.

In addition, teacher Reyna Martínez, Coordinator of the Diploma Course in INAFOCAN, in the main speech of the event, reiterated that “you now have the tools necessary to work with persons with special needs or disabilities. You also developed skills to make adjustments to the curriculum in order to encourage greater academic integration.”

Teacher Juana González, a graduate of the Diploma Course and representing her fellow students, thanked “the entities that made it possible to hold this diploma course, from which we learned a great deal. This program helped us to improve our skills in order to facilitate the transmission of knowledge to our students.”
