A student and a graduate from the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (UNPHU) won first prize in the competition to create short feature films. The contest was organized by the National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism (CNCCMDL).
Contestants were the young man William Caraballo and Engineer Emely Rodríguez, both from the UNPHU School of Chemistry. Both of them registered for the contest in July, striving to make the best short film they could that would address climate change, its causes, consequences, mitigation in this country, and possible actions to be taken by those who watch the video, inviting them to join in this cause.
This initiative by both contestants was motivated by their concern about climate change and desire to contribute to its mitigation, and they saw in the contest an opportunity to begin their task.
The competition included participation by 11 students from different universities and institutions around the country. Prizes were awarded to the winders consisting of cash prizes of RD$25,000 for each of them, diplomas, a tablet, and a trip to Bonn, Germany, in November of this year for one week in each city, to participate in the 23rd meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 23) of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (CMNUCC), where they will present the short film to all the participants of that international event.
This recognition positions UNPHU as the university that provides the best preparation to its students on topics of ecology and the environment, by noting that the knowledge and skills used to create the winning short film are part of what they acquired in their study program, speeches, and conferences to raise awareness about climate change around the world, and which UNPHU offers as an entity that thinks in green.
The awards ceremony was held in the Hotel Intercontinental Real Santo Domingo.
