Santo Domingo, Rep. Sun – October 2025
On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, Minister of Health Víctor Atallah led a meeting with students from the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), where he reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening comprehensive mental health policies and actions as a key part of public health.
During his meeting, he emphasized that the community approach is a fundamental pillar, as it is the best channel to reach those suffering from this condition, which must be addressed alongside others, as their disorders directly affect the well-being of the body and mind.
The official emphasized the importance of working comprehensively with youth, creating spaces for listening, trust, and mutual support. While urging young people to care for their physical and emotional health, he said they “are the future of the homeland, of their communities and of their bodies, what they do today defines tomorrow.”
Representing UNPHU, Dr. Patricia Matos, the academic vice-chancellor of UNPHU, thanked the institution for hosting the symposium “Mental Health with a Community Approach,” calling it a space to reflect and take action on one of today’s greatest challenges: the emotional and social well-being of communities.
“We at UNPHU take up this cause with a deep humanistic commitment. We promote an education that trains professionals dedicated not only to technical excellence but also to empathy, respect, and service to others,” Matos said.
She mentioned that discussing mental health with a community-based approach involves recognizing that caring for the mind and emotions is not solely the responsibility of hospitals or clinics, but also of schools, families, public spaces, and universities.
The event held at the UNPHU facility brought together national and international experts, academics, the public sector, and civil society to reflect together, share good practices, and develop sustainable solutions for mental health as a fundamental human right.
